Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
What is the parental generation?
Parental generation is the first generation involving two individuals that are mated
What is the filial generation?
The first set of offspring from these parents is then known as the F1 generation.
What happens in a mono hybrid cross?
Two individuals with homozygous genotypes which result in the opposite phenotype for a certain genetic trait
What are genes?
Information passed on from parents to offspring
What are alleles?
Genes controlling a trait that differ
What is a punnet square?
Punnett squares are a tool used by geneticists to predict the possible combinations of genes that could be inherited
Not 100% accurate as fertilisation is random and independent
What is mendels first law?
Law of segregation
Genes segregate at meiosis so that each gamete contains only one of two possessed by the parent
What is mendels second law?
Independent assortment
Alleles of different genes assort independently during gamete formation
