Memory- WMM AO1 Flashcards
Who developed the working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch in 1974
What does the WMM say about memory?
STM is an ‘active’ store which holds several pieces of info whilst they are being worked on
Sees STM as an active processor
What are the four components of WMM?
Central Executive
Phonological Loop
Episodic Buffer
Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad
What are key assumptions of the WMM?
STM-number of different stores which are limited in capacity
Different slave systems coordinated by central executive
Cannot easily do two tasks which rely on same slave system
What are key assumptions of the WMM?
STM is number of different stores which are limited in capacity
Different slave systems are coordinated by central executive
Cannot easily do two tasks which rely on same slave system
What is the central executive (CE) ?
Command centre
Delegates tasks to other systems
Manages attention
Not a store but an attention mechanism
What is duration and capacity of CE?
Limited capacity and duration
What type of info can CE process?
Any type of incoming information
What is the phonological loop (PL)?
Slave system
Temporary store
Primarily an acoustic store
What type of info can PL process?
Any type of incoming information
What is duration and capacity of PL?
2 secs duration
Limited capacity
How is PL encoded?
Things that enter our memory in form of auditory info (read written info- speak words aloud in mind so convert to auditory form)
What can the PL be divided into?
Phonological store (PS)
Articulatory process (AP)
What is the PS?
Phonological store
Inner ear
Holds auditory memory traces for a few seconds before they decay
Remembers vocal sounds in order
What is AP?
Articulatory process
Inner voice
Allows words/sounds that are heard or seen to be stored through rehearsal by silent repetition (sub-vocal repetition)
