memory - WMM Flashcards
what is Visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Controls our visual and spatial awareness.
consists of a visual cache(passive store of form and colour( and inner scribe(spacial information)
what is an Episodic buffer?
interrogates information from all slave systems, central executive and links to LTM
what is Central executive?
Filters out all information before entering slave system and controls what we pay attention to. limited capacity of 4 items
Phonological loop
The systems that control what sounds we pay attention to. consists of:
phonological store - holds recently heard words(inner ear)
Articulatory control system - hols info via sub-vocal repetition.
limited capacity of 2 seconds
what did Baddely estalish?
P- perform dual processing
e- p’s asked to either do 2 visual tasks or one visual and verbal tasks. Results show recall is better when tasks are using different processes.
e- suggests VSS and PL exist as separate stores and the capacity of VSS is limited = forgetting
l- if one part of the model exists, all part of the model exists
What did Shallice and Warrington establish?
p- evidence of WMM
e- KF had brain damage where he could perform visually but had verbal impairments
e - VSS and PL are in different stored in different brain regions
l- different types of STM are not in 1 store
What did Prabhakaran et al establish?
P- evidence for EB
e- p’s completed spacial+visual tasks info using FMRI scans. Results show more activation in the pre-frontal cortex when info is integrated
e- EB is in the pre-fontal cortex, temporary storage between visual and spatial information
l - gives credit to WMM
Limitations of WMM
Shallice and Warrington - KF was brain damaged patient with a unique condition - his impairments may not be similar to those with amnesia or disease - cannot be generalized - lacks ecological validity
No evidence of the role and how the central executive works - a vague concept. mentions attention but not how it allocates and directs attention
