Q

What is the central executive

A

Drives system, decides how attention is directed, allocates resources to slave systems, limited capacity, no permanent storage capacity

Q

What research is there to support the central executive

A

Bunge (2000) - MRI used to see which parts of brain were most active during performance of one task and two at once. More activity during two tasks showing increased demand for attention on 2 tasks

Q

What is the visuo - spatial sketchpad (inner eye)

A

Slave system 1, deals with visual and spatial info, limited capacity, holds info for very short time, divided into visual cache - stores visual info, inner scribe - records arrangement of objects

Q

What researches there to support the VSS

A

Gathercole and Baddeley (1993) - Pt’s had difficulty tracking moving point of light and describing angles on a hollow letter F, as both require VSS use so VSS is a separate slave system

Q

What is the phonological loop

A

Slave system 2, deals with auditory info and the order of info, has limited capacity, split into phonological store - store of the words you hear, articulatory control process - allows rehearsal of heard words

Q

What research is there to support the phonological loop

A

Baddeley - found pt’s recalled more short words in serial order than longer ones, supporting capacity being set by how long words take to say

Q

What is the episodic buffer

A

Added to original model, temporary store that links with LTM integrating all info from stores to LTM

Q

What research is there to support the episodic buffer

A

Alkhakifa (2009) - patient with Beverly impaired LTM had STM capacity of up to 25 items showing buffer is needed

Q

What is a positive evaluation point for WMM

A

Research support - Gathercole and Baddeley found pt’s had difficulty simultaneously tracking moving point of light and describing angles on a hollow letter F showingVSS and PL are seperate

Q

What is a negative evaluation point for WMM

A

Artificial lab experiment - Baddeley asked pt’s to recall long serial words in order which is not relevant to real life scenarios - lacks external validity
