Biopsychology - localisation Flashcards
What is phrenology
Process that involves observing and/or feeling the skull to determine an individual’s psychological attributes
What is localisation
Theory that specific areas of the brain are associated with particular physical and psychological functions
What is hemispheric lateralisation
The dominance of one hemisphere of the brain for particular physical and psychological functions
What three concentric layers form the brain
Central core, limbic system, cerebral cortex
What is the function of the central core
Regulates our most primitive and involuntary behaviours such as breathing and sleeping
What is the function of the limbic system
Contains parts of our brain involved in controlling our emotions, such as amygdala
What is the function of the cerebral cortex
Regulates our higher intellectual processes
What process occurs in the frontal lobe
Awareness of what we’re doing within our environment and motor movement
What process occurs in the parietal lobe
Sensory perception
What process occurs in the temporal lobe
Auditory ability
What process occurs in the occipital lobe
Vision
What is brocas area
Responsible for converting thoughts into speech
What is wernickes area
Important role in understanding other peoples speech and making speech make sense
What smaller area is identified in the frontal lobe
Motor cortex
What smaller area is identified in the parietal lobe
Somatosensory cortex
