Q

Explain how verbal mnemonics helps you to recall information

A

There are different types of verbal mnemonics. One is an acronym (ORANGES could help you remember oranges, raspberries, apples, nectarines, gooseberries, eggs and saltanas) where each letter of the acronym is the first letter of the object. This is a reduction in data, because you only have to remember one word to trigger the recall of all the other words. Another verbal mnemonic is using a sentence like “big elephants can always understand small elephants” to remember how to spell because

Q

Explain the loci method

A

If you have a list of objects to remember, you can imagine a journey you know well and place an object at each landmark. When you need to recall the words just imagine the journey and it will trigger the recall

Q

How is elaborate rehearsal different to rote rehearsal?

A

Rote rehearsal is where you repeat information over and over in your head without actually understanding the information, whereas elaborate rehearsal is where you process the information on a deeper level by making spider diagrams and ordering the words based on importance

Q

How do memory strategies work through organisation?

A

When we organise material we establish associations in the brain to make the recall easier. It has been shown that participants are more likely to recall a list of words if it has been divided into different categories than if presented randomly

Q

How does organisation help when we use the loci method?

A

When we use the loci method we imagine a journey and associate it with the objects you have to remember, therefore you have to organise your journey and objects into a logical order

Q

How does organisation help when using verbal mnemonics?

A

When using an acronym or other verbal mnemonic you have to decide a logical for the information that you are making the verbal mnemonic for

Q

When using a verbal mnemonic how are you reducing the data?

A

When using a verbal mnemonic like an acronym we reduce the information that we have to learn by only having to remember a word that triggers the rest of the information

Q

What is cued recall?

A

Research has shown that we are more likely to recall information if we are given cues like questions.

Q

How do verbal mnemonics use cued recall?

A

When using an acronym the letters in the acronym act as a cue to trigger the information

Q

How does the loci method use cued recall?

A

The landmarks in the journey act as a cue to trigger the objects you remembered

Q

How does semantic processing help us to recall information?

A

If we understand the meaning of what we are learning then we are more likely to recall it. Eg of we were asked if a word fitted into a sentence then we are more likely to remember these words than if we were asked if the word rhymed with another word or if they are in upper case, because seeing of a word fits into a sentence needs semantic processing

Q

Which memory strategy requires semantic processing?

A

All of them (loci method, elaborate rehearsal and verbal mnemonics)
