Evaluation Of Multistore Model Flashcards

Q

Why is rote rehearsal a weakness?

A

Rote rehearsal is seen as being too simplistic, because we can rehearse a piece of information over and over again without the information transferring to LTM. However we often are able to recall interesting pieces of information from LTM without rehearsing it. This contradicts the model when it states that information must be rehearsed in STM to be transferred to LTM

Q

Why is the study of HM a strength to the multistore model?

A

HM had a damaged LTM but a normal STM, so it supports idea that there are different stores

Q

Is Korsakoff’s syndrome a strength or weakness to the model?

A

Korsakoff’s syndrome is common in alcoholics and is a strength to the model, because sufferers have a normal STM but a damaged LTM. So they can have conversations, but can’t recall the conversation later. This supports the model’s idea that there are different parts for STM and LTM

Q

What is the study of KF?

A

KF is a man who was in a car accident. This left him with a damaged STM (he only remembered 1 or occasionally 2 items in a miller test), but he could get new information into LTM. The model states that information has to be rehearsed in STM in order to get to LTM, therefore the study of KF suggests that we don’t need STM for information to get to LTM or that STM is made up of many different parts and only one or two of the parts were damaged.

Q

What study did Morris et al do and did it support or contradict the multistore model?

A

Morris et al (1985) gave participants fake football scores and asked them to immediately recall the scores so that the information stayed in STM and didn’t get transferred to LTM. The results showed that participants with an interest in football were better than the participants without an interest in football.
This contradicts the multistore model when it states that information travels through the model in a linear fashion and only goes one way, because the people with the interest would use previous knowledge in LTM to help them remember the scores. This shows that information can flow back in the model.

Q

Name a strength of the multistore model

A

Lots of research has been done on the multistore model to discover the characteristics of each store by Miller, Conrad, Peterson and Peterson, Bahrick et al
