Evaluation Of Age And EWT Flashcards
What is the strength of the Flin et al study and Memon et al study?
It was done under laboratory conditions so there was high control over extraneous variables like what was talked about and time periods so it is clear to see how age affects accuracy of eye witness testimonies and the study can be repeated to see if the results are reliable
What are the practical applications of the studies of age and the accuracy of eye witness testimonies?
The police know to question young and old people as soon as possible and juries can be warned about the accuracy of young and old eyewitnesses if they haven’t been questioned immediately
What is the strength of the Yarmey study?
It has high ecological validity, because the participants were in their natural setting and they didn’t know they were in a study so the demand characteristics were reduced
What is the weakness of the Flin et al study and Memon et al study?
Although there was high control over extraneous variables at the time of the event, in the 5 months (Flin et al) and week (Memon et al) they have no control over the participants lives. Some participants will have more stressful lives than others which could make their recall worse
What is the weakness of the Yarmey study?
Although it has high ecological valid it has low control over extraneous variables like distractions on the street like noise and attractive people that can reduce their concentration
What is a weakness of the Yarmey study?
Talking to a woman on a street is not as serious as an incident they would have to be a witness for so it doesn’t show how age effects the accuracy of eye witnesses
