Memory stores Flashcards
What does the Short-Term Sensory Store do?
It receives stimuli from sense organs before undergoing selective attention and sending the relevant information to the Short-Term Memory. This happens in under a second.
What is the “DCR” process?
Detection: Information is detected from the environment
Comparison: Information is compared to previous experiences
Recognition: Information is matched to a previous experience
What is “selective attention”?
The process of ignoring irrelevant information and transferring relevant information to the Short-Term Memory
What does the Short-Term Memory do?
It receives and holds 7 +/- pieces of information for 30 - 60s from the Short-Term Sensory Store as well as initiates the correct motor programme from the Long Term Memory
What does Long Term Memory do?
It holds unlimited information (such as motor programmes) for a long time
What does the visuospacial sketchpad do?
It stores visual/spacial information
What does the Phonological Loop do?
It stores words/numbers
What does the Central Executive do?
It coordinates verbal and visual information together and stores it in the episodic buffer
What is the Episodic Buffer?
It stores the product of the central executive which links to the Long Term Memory
What are the two parts of the Sensory Memory?
Iconic: sights, < 0.5 seconds
Echoix: sounds, 3-4 seconds
What is meant by “explicit” Long Term Memory?
Explcit: can be clearly articulated and described
- semantic = includes words
- episodic = includes events
What is meant by “implicit” Long Term Memory?
Implicit: things that aren’t clearly articulated
- procedures (e.g. bike riding) = procedural
- recent experiences influencing thoughts = priming
