MEMORY - research on coding - Baddeley 1966a 1966b Flashcards
1
Q
Outline Baddeleys research on coding.
A
presented Ps with :
- acoustically similar words eg cat cab can
- acoustically dissimilar words - words that sounded diff
- semantically similar words - words with similar meanings
- semantically dissimilar words - words with different meanings
2
Q
what are the findings?
A
- when recalling from STM, acoustics improved recall
- when recalling from LTM, semantics improved recall
3
Q
Evaluate this study.
A
+ high internal validity = importance evidence for separate memory functions and was a well controlled lab study = increase value
- Low external validity = tasks were artificial. eg word list had no personal meaning to participants. They do not refer to everyday encoding and recall = limited application
