Memory Flashcards
Executive Functions
Effortful control of cognition and behavior processes associated with goal-directed behaviors
Primacy effect
occur because items at the beginning of the list have been rehearsed and transferred to long-term memory
Recency effect
occur because items at the end of the list are still being rehearsed and still active in short–term memory
Working memory
short-term storage plus the ability to manipulate, or work with, maintained information
Working Memory Properties
Capacity limited, individual differences in capacity, changes as a function of development, crucial to acquire knowledge and new skills, highly predictive for higher cognitive functions and educational success
Long-term memory
The capacity of long-term memory is unlimited.
Encoding
initial processing of “to-be-stored” information
Retrieval
recovering stored information
retrieval
recovering stored information
Declarative Memory
Episodic and semantic memory
Episodic
Remembering the actual experience
Semantic
Remembering names and facts
Non-declarative memory
Procedural, conditioning, priming
Procedural memory/skill aquisition
How we do things
Priming
Enhanced/biased performance as a result of previous exposure to an item
