Memory Flashcards
What is Memory?
A group of mental process that are in charge of acquiring and retrieving information overtime.
(What is memory?) What is encoding?
Encoding is transferring information into a form of that can be entered and retained by the memory system.
Basically, information that is is retained and taken in by the memory system.
What is Storage?
Retaining information into memory so that it can be used later.
Basically, it takes information into the memory system that can be used later.
What is retrieval?
Recovering stored information for conscious awareness.
Basically, taking stored information out to be actively used.
What is the function, capacity and duration of sensory memory?
Function: Taking in Environmental information. It briefly stores sensory impressions long enough to be processed for basic physical characteristics.
Capacity: Large Capacity
Duration: 1/4 sec - 3 sec
1/4-1/2 sec for visual info, 3-4 sec for auditory info (echoic memory).
How many stages are in the model of memory?
3; Sensory memory, short term (working) memory and long term.
What is the function, capacity and duration of short term (working) memory?
Function: Takes in new information from sensory information. Old information is retrieved from long term.
Capacity: Limited
Duration: approx. 20 sec
What is the function, capacity and duration of long term memory?
Function: Takes in encoded information from short term and is stored.
Capacity: Unlimited
Duration: Lasts a lifetime; stores for long periods of time.
Chunking
Grouping small bits of information into larger groups of information to expand memory work load.
What is the difference between short term memory and working memory?
Short term memory is simple storage of temporary information.
Working memory is the active processing and manipulation of information you are hold in awareness to complete complex cognitive tasks.
(Working memory) What is Phonological loop?
Its a specialized for verbal material (Lists of numbers and words)
(Working memory) What is Visuospatial sketchpad?
Specialized for spatial and visual material (layouts of room/city)
(Working memory) What is Central executive?
Controls attention, ingrates information, manages activities of 2 other components. Also initiates retrieval and decision processes.
What is the stage model of memory?
Sensory memory –> Short term–>Long term memory
First arrow the in between is Attention
Second one is Encode and store going towards long term and from long term to short its retrieval.
Encoded
Transferring new information into a form that can be retrieved later.
