Memmler Chapter One (Organization of Human Body) Flashcards
Anatomy
The scientific term for the study of body structure
Physiology
is the term for the study of how the body functions
Disease
Anything that upsets the normal structore or function of the body
Pathology
the study of diseases
Cells
The basic units of all life
Tissues
Specialized groups of cells
Organs
tissues function together to create organs
Systems
Organs working together for the same general purpose
Homeostasis
The overall steady state within the organism “balance”
Extracellular Fluid
Bathes the cell, carries nutrients to and from the cells, and transports some substances into and out of the cells.
Intracellular Fluid
is contained inside the cells
Negative Feedback
A control system based on information returning to a source (the main method for maintaining homeostasis)
Metabolism
All the life sustaining reactions that occur within the body systems together make up metabolism
Catabolism
Complex substances are BROKEN down into simpler compounds
Anabolism
Simple compounds are used to manufacture materials needed for growth function and tissue repair. Consists of BUILDING or synthesis, reactions.
