Massage Movements Flashcards
Mechanical Effects of VIBRATION
- Stimulates synovial activity
- Loosens muscle fibers
- Loosens joint ligaments
Reflexive Effects of VIBRATION
- Penetrating Nerve Simulation
- Stimulates the organs when applied over the abdomen or low back
- Jostling decreases muscle guarding
- Reduces pain (gate theory)
- Hyperemia
- Increases circulation
Contraindications of VIBRATION
- Muscle Spasm
- Spastic Paralysis
- Insomnia
- Neuralgia - nerve pain
- Fatigue
- Over the low abdomen during pregnancy or menstruation
- Over the kidneys
Mechanical Effects of TAPOTEMENT
- Increases gaseous exchange (coughing)
- Cupping over the throax loosens mucous
- Tapping over the sinuses loosens mucous
Reflexive Effects of TAPOTEMENT
- Stimulates muscles
- Stimulates nerves
- Stimulates organs
- Stimulates skin, vessels, etc
- Hyperemia
- Increases circulation
Contraindications of TAPOTEMENT
- Muscle Spasm
- Spastic paralysis
- Insomnia
- Neuralgia- nerve pain
- Fatigue
- Over the low abdomen during pregnancy or menstruation
- Over the kidneys
Mechanical Effects of SWEDISH GYMNASTICS
- Stretches muscle tissue and related soft tissue
- Increases flexibility and ROM at a specific joint
- Increase blood supply and nutrtion to joints and muscles
- Removes lymph and waste (with movement - mostly with active ROM)
- Loosens adhesions by working the muscle/movement
Reflexive Effects of SWEDISH GYMNASTICS
- Stimulates the nervous system
- Increases blood and body temperature
- Tones muscles
Contraindications SWEDISH GYMNASTICS
- Tear to a ligament, tendon, or muscle
- Acute injuries
- Unhealed fracture
- Post-surgery
- Heart Conditions
Mechanical Effects of EFFLEURAGE
- compresses and stretches skin, broadens tissue
- moves venous fluids
- moves local lymphatic fluids
- reduces edema
- aids circulation by moving fluids/waste products
- warms superficial tissue
- desquamation of skin cells
Reflexive Effects of EFFLEURAGE
- Relaxing- elicits parasympathetic response
- Decreases heart rate
- General vasodilation- blood vessels widen
- Increases Endorphins
- Can decrease pain
Contraindications of EFFLEURAGE
- Acute inflammation
- Pitted edema
- Newly formed scar tissue
- Very hairy skin (knots hair)
- Hyperesthesia (Ticklish)
Mechanical Effects of PETRISSAGE
- warms skin and deeper tissues
- stretches and broadens muscles
- stretches vessels (veins and lymphatics)
- improves circulation
- moves local interstital fluids
- Helps break up- and or prevent adhesions
Reflexive Effects of PETRISSAGE
- Encourages relaxation when performed slowly
- Encourages stimulation when performed rapidly
- Affects proprioception
- Increases peristalis over abdomen
- Increases elimination of metabolic waste
Contraindications of PETRISSAGE
- Atrophied muscles
- Flaccid paralysis ( a clinical manifestation characterized by weakness or paralysis and reduced muscle tone without other obvious cause ( eg, trauma)
Mechanical Effects of FRICTION
- Temporary ischemia
- Compresses and spreads muscle fibers
- Loosens fascial adhesions
Reflexive Effects of FRICTION
- Hyperemia
- Decreases local/referred pain (gate theory)
- Relaxes muscles (golgi tendon organ)
- Increases peristalsis
- Increases circulation
- Increases flexibility
- Increases muscle function
Contraindications of FRICTION
- Recent acute injuries
- Neuritis (inflammation of a nerve)
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
*** Any contraindication associated to effleurage or petrissage is also a contradiction to friction except for hairy skin and hyperesthesia
