Membrane transport and tissues Flashcards
Simple diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration without energy or protein channels
Facilitated diffusion
The movement of particles down a concentration gradient through protein channels
Osmosis
An example of facilitated diffusion with water
Active transport
The movement of particles against the concentration gradient using ATP
What influences the rate of diffusion
Size, polarity, temperature, concentration gradient and membrane permeability
Exocytosis
the process of a cell exporting material using vesicular transport
Endocytosis
the process of a cell ingesting material by enveloping it in a portion of its cell membrane, and then pinching off that portion of membrane
Where is sodium more concentrated
Outside cell
Hypertonic
A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution
Hypotonic
a solution that has a lower concentration of solutes than another solution
Tissue
a group of cells that are similar in structure and perform a specific function
What are the 4 types of tissue
Epithelial, Connective, muscle and nervous
Epithelial tissue
cover the exterior surfaces of the body, line internal cavities and passageways, and form certain glands
Connective tissue
binds the cells and organs of the body together, provides support
Muscle tissue
Provides movement
