Membrane Transport Flashcards
Explain the differences between intracellular fluid, interstitial fluid, transcellular fluid, and blood plasma
Intracellular: fluid inside cell (high in K+, low in Na+ Cl-). Opposite true for extracellular.
Interstitial: fluid outside intravascular compartment
Transcellular fluid: Trapped in a system (Synovial, ocular, cerebral)
Blood plasma: In blood?
Interstitial, transcellular, blood are all extracellular
Water Transport
Oncotic Pressure - pulls water from interstitial back to plasma
Ultrafiltration - when hydrostatic pressure > oncotic pressure: causes the water to move into the tissues
Explain the differences between primary and secondary active transport and provide examples of each
Primary active transport: Uses ATPase or other form of energy consumption
Examples: Na/K pump
Secondary active transport: Piggybacks off of the concentration gradient of another ion/molecule
Examples:
Symporters/Cotransporters - SGLT, Sodium Amino Acid Transporter
Antiporters/Exchangers - Sodium-Calcium Exchanger
Usually anions for anions, cations for cations, etc.
