Aging Flashcards
Effects on height:
(peak height at 16-29yold) – compression of cartilaginous disks between vertebrae and loss of vertebral bone
Effects on body fat:
Redistribution of body fat
Mass of fat increases and accumulates around abdominal viscera and subcutaneous tissue – less around extremities and face
Effects on skin
Skin thins, generation of keratinocytes slows, amount of elastin/collagen decreases, melanocytes reduces photoprotection (graying), decreasing of Langerhan cells (immune system decreases) and less sweat/sebum production
Effects on musculoskeletal system:
becomes weak, brittle, stiff
Effects on vision:
Pupils lose elasticity (less responsive) – cataracts, glaucoma (elevated pressure in eyes), macular degeneration (central vision gone)
Effects on hearing:
Impaired hearing because of loss of hair cells in Corti, loss of nerve cells in cholera, reduced blood supply
Effects on the oral cavity
Teeth wear down, enamel thins, dentin darkens, gums reduce, jaw bone shrinks, mouth dries
