Cell Cycle and Cancer Flashcards
List and describe the phases of the eukaryotic cell cycle
Interphase:
G1:
Preparing for division
Getting proteins and RNA ready for DNA synthesis
Organelles are replicated
S:
Chromosomes are doubling
G2:
Rapid growth and protein synthesis
Mitosis (M):
Describe the stages of mitosis
Prophase: Condensation, spindles appear
Prometaphase: Further condensation, spindles attach
Metaphase: Condensation completes, chromosomes align in center
Anaphase: Centromeres divide
Telophase: Decondensation, new nuclear membrane forms
Cytokinesis: Cytoplasm divides fully
Explain the role of cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) in cell cycle regulation
M: cyclin B, CDK 1
S: Cyclin A, CDK 2
G1: Cyclin D, CDK 4/6
