Energy: Light, Chemical reactions, inorganic, organic
Nutrients: CHON = cytoplasm, S P = Nucleic acids/ AAs, K Mg Ca Fe = proteins/cofactors/enzymes
Temp: Psychrophils (0-20) Mesophils (20-45) Thermophils (45-900)
pH: 4-11
Growth and Bacterial Respiration
Growth:
Binary Fission
Bacterial growth curve: lag phase, exponential phase, stationary phase, decline
Bacterial respiration: final electron acceptor
Aerobic: O2
Anaerobic: inorganic ion (nitrate, phosphate, potassium)
Facultative: O2 or nitrite
Metabolism pathway and what superoxide mutase / catalase do.
Metabolism: FADH2 + O2 = FAD + O- + O- + 2H
Superoxide mutase allows: O- + O- + 2H = H2O2 + O2
Catalase allows: 2 H2O2 = 2 H2O + O2
Anaerobic bacteria do not have superoxide dismutase / catalase. Therefore death.
