Membrane and Cell Transport Flashcards
what does the plasma membrane do?
The plasma membrane surrounds all cells and physically separates the cytoplasm
what is the phospholipid bilayer?
-an extremal surface lined with hydrophilic polar heads
-nonpolar, hydrophobic, fatty acid tails sandwiched in between
fluid mosaic model
describes the plasma membrane as a phospholipid bilayer in which proteins are imbedded.
6 functions of membrane proteins
- channel proteins
-carrier proteins
-cell recognition proteins
-receptor proteins
-enzymatic proteins - junction proteins
what does selectively permeable mean?
allows some substances to move across the membrane but not all
describe concentration gradient
when molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
what does the primary cell wall contain?
Contains cellulose fibrils and Non cellulose substances that allow the cell to stretch when growing
what does the secondary cell wall consist of?
consists mainly of cellulose microfibrils and lignin
living cells are connected by narrow, membrane-lines ?
plasmodesmata
what are the 2 primary external feature of animal cells?
1.) extracellular matrix
2.) junctions between cells
what are the 3 types of junctions between cells?
adhesion, tight, and gap junction
what is the process in which particles spread out evenly in an available space?
diffusion
how do ions and polar molecules cross membranes?
By facilitated diffusion
-also known as passive transport
Diffusion of water across a differentials permeable membrane is called?
Osmosis
What are the effects of osmosis?
Osmosis can affect the size and shape of cells
Hypotonic-cells sweet, burst
Hypertonic-shriveled cells
Where do molecules move during active transport?
Molecules move against their concentration gradient
Where does the energy used during active transport come from?
The mitochondria (ATP)
Proteins engaged in active transport
Pumps
Phagocytosis vs pinocytosis
Phagocytosis- large particle
Pinocytosis- liquid or small particle
What is a selective, highly efficient form of endocytosis?
Receptor-mediated endocytosis
How are membrane proteins transported across membranes
Vesicles
The transport of macromolecules out of a cell in a vesicle is called?
Exocytosis
The transport of macromolecules into a cell in a vesicle is called?
Endocytosis
