  • 2-3 week old infants
  • adult model displayed 1 of 3 expressions or hand movements
  • dummy in infant’s mouth during initial display to stop any response
  • after display, dummy removed and child was filmed
  • controlled observation
  • selected 4 stimuli (3 faces and 1 gesture) and observed infant’s response
  • video judged by independent observer twice
