MEL Flashcards
Item 2 of an MEL includes information regarding the repair interval. What are the various repair intervals?
B = 3 days are allowed before repair must be made.
In the MEL, under the remarks, what do the symbols (M) and (O) mean?
(M) means that there is a maintenance procedure associated with the fault.
(O) means that there is an operations procedure associated with the fault.
What considerations should you make when deciding as captain whether to take a defect allowable under the MEL?
Implications of multiple sectors, and an increase to crew workload. A captain does not have to take an allowable defect. But this action should be discussed with the flight manager technical ASAP.
What is the main maintenance base for the 767 and what are the ramifications of, (main maintenance base, base, main base)?
LHR
At main maintenance base, once an aircraft dispatches on the first flight of the day, the base reverts to a transit station for all subsequent transits of that aircraft for the remainder of the day GMT.
What does ACF mean, when is it permissible?
Acceptable carried forward.
Used for a defect that complies with the MEL, that requires no maintenance action, or affects only non safety related equipment, and there are no maintenance personnel or spares available. May not be used for CDL items. Or ex base, with “no dispatch ex main base” restriction.
What is the ACF procedure?
Captain contacts maintrol to advise of defect.
Maintrol record request and issue a unique number to the captain.
Captain then enters following info into the action taken box of the tech log:
ACF
Unique number
Reason for ACF
Signature
The defect including the unique number must be entered for every subsequent sector, until rectified. Even if defect no longer apparent!
What is a single event authorisation?
When there is a defect that requires maintenance either sect 3 or CDL, (sect1), and there is no BA engineer avail.
Procedure:
A local engineer must be located via contact with maintrol. Captain must assure he is authorised to work of the nature required.
Alleviated ETOPS transit check, when how?
When required and no BA approved engineer. Captain contacts maintrol for authority. The schedule is included in the spare forms folder.
What is the difference between an eicas, warning, caution, and advisory message?
Warning = non-normal, lights and aural, immediate crew awareness and corrective action required.
Caution= non-normal auction light and aural, immediate crew awareness and corrective action MAY be required.
Advisory = non normal, Amber text indented. Routine crew awareness and corrective action MAY be required.
What is the relevance of a status message?
A system condition that affects airplane dispatch. There are no inflight crew procedures for status messages. Should be checked before engine start. Once you taxi they are irrelevant. Good practise to check the manual though.
What are the rectification intervals for the following categories of inoperative items?
A, B, C, D
A = No standard interval, but must be rectified under the conditions stated in the MEL.
B = rectified within 3 calendar days excluding the day of discovery.
C = Rectified within 10 calendar days excluding the day of discovery.
D = Rectified within 120 calendar days, excluding day of discovery.
What does an (E) mean in the MEL?
Indicates items that impose additional requirements on ETOPS flights.
Which category of repair interval may BA use a one time extension for the same interval again?
B 3 calendar days & C 10 calendar days.
What does a (P) mean in the first item of an MEL
It indicates that there is a performance penalty associated with the defect.
