Meiosis Flashcards
What is meiosis?
Type of cell division that creates 4 genetically unique haploid sex cells.
What is the purpose of meiosis?
Leads to genetic diversity by creating unique daughter cells, where one is fertilized by natural selection.
Where does meiosis occur?
Testes for men, ovaries for women.
Explain process of independent assortment.
Independent assortment takes place before first cell division, where pairs of homologous chromosomes line up randomly at the cell equator.
Explain process of segregation.
Segregation is where homologous chromosomes separate and migrate to cell poles before cell division.
Explain process of crossing over.
Crossing over is when segments of DNA is swapped between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes. This process can split distantly linked genes.
