Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
Mitochondria of plant and animal cells
What are the products of aerobic respiration?
CO2 + H2O + 36ATP (lots)
What are the products of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic Acid + 2ATP
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the breaking down of glucose in the presence of oxygen while anaerobic respiration is the breaking down of glucose without oxygen.
Where does anaerobic respiration occur?
Cytoplasm of plant and animal cells.
Describe 3 structures within the mitochondria
Outter membrane allows only small molecules, like glucose through.
Space between inner and outter membrane is called the matrix. Contains enzymes for respiration and genetic information so can replicate itself.
Inner membrane folds to form cristae. Folded cristae means more membrane can fit in mitochondria, maximizing surface area thus rate of respiration as gases can be more optimally diffused.
