To win the Battle of Hastings -
Strong army against Harold - 700 ships from Normandy
Influence from the Pope - Normans were v religious & the Pope backed William
Normans were promised land - a strong pull to help William establish his new Kingdom
WHY DID NORMANS SETTLE
Land & wealth - 50% of wealth was Norman and only 10 AS landowners remained in 1086
Ascension of Norman power - Marcher earldoms and 500 M&B castles
Normanisation of the Church - Archbishop Lanfranc & the development of Cathedrals
Dominance of Norman Culture - Old French was the superior language
NORMAN EXPERIENCES AND IMPACTS
Rebellions - Many rebellions took place and were put down harshly - Harrying of the North
Implemented Feudal System - William I granted land to loyal normal followers
Castles - 500 M&B castles that Anglo-Saxons had to build
High status - Norman aristocracy was seen as elite b/c they spoke Old French
