Why did Indians migrate during the Early Modern period?
lTrade:
• India was a thriving society under the Mughal Empire, but by 1600 Britain had discovered the wealth that India had to offer in spices and silk.
• 1600, Elizabeth issues a charter for the East India Company to monopolise trade in India. By the end of the period England controlled India.
• New routes from Britain to India, and so Indians could easily travel to Britain on these ships. Some Indian men worked on the ships between England and India (called Lascars).
• Trading ports in India were called ‘factories’, set up in Mumbai, Surat, Chennai and Kolkata
Employment: Mainly in shipping (Lascars) and some Indian women returned to England with English families as Nannies called ayahs.
Education: A small number of rich Indian students travelled to England for university.
What were their experiences like?
• Sailors. Some settled in ports such as London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Liverpool
• Servants. Some were left at their arrival ports as their employers preferred English servants, but then some were respected Some child servants were seen as a status symbol like African children.
• Ayahs. Some kept their jobs, but many were dismissed once the children grew up
