Conduits were lead pipes which brought spring water.
What were cesspits?
Cespits holes in the ground where people dumped their waste.
What were gongfermors?
Gongfermors were people who removed waste.
What was pottage?
Pottage was a thick vegetable soup eaten by peasants.
What foods were considered luxury?
Meat, fish, eggs and cheese were considered luxuries.
What were ale and cider made of?
- Ale was made by boiling water (killing germs) and barley (filled with nutrients)
- Cider was made in a similar way using apples
Ale and cider were much healthier than water
Was meat widely available in mediveal times?
Meat wasn’t widely available in medieval times. Only rich people could eat it.
What was the life expectancy in Medieval Britain?
The life expectancy in Medieval Britain was 24-27 years old.
What was the order of society in Medieval times?

Who are clergy?
Clergy are people who perform religious duties in the Christian Church.
Who were Lords?
Lords are men of high rank in society, given title by King.

What was farming and food like for most medieval people?
- Peasants make own food
*Bad harvests —> starvation
What were the towns like?
- Small yet crowded towns.
- Filled with crafts and trades
- Very busy on market days
How was the technology limited?
- Made by hand.
- Water mills and wind mills only
- Printing press in 1470
- Microscope not invented
