Medicines lab Flashcards
Describe the process of filling a syringe from an ampule
Get equipment you need
know everything about the med your giving
hand hygiene
2 checks and 6 rights
wrap gauze around the ampule and snap away from body
draw out 30% more medication than needed with a filter needle attached to syringe to get out glass particles ( DONT TOUCH THE RIM)
When drawing solution touch only the plunger knob
expel air and extra solution, check dose
recheck label with CMAR
engage safety on filter needle and remove, attach appropriate needle
discard ampule
lock the med cart
hand hygiene
administer
What are the common sites for intradermal injections?
What are they used for?
What equipment?
What max volume?
What angle?
inner surface of forearm. upper back, and scapula
sensitivity tests, allergy tests, local anesthesia
tuberculin syringe in tenths and hundredths of a mL
26-27 gauge needle 1/4-1/2 inch
0.5 mL
5 to 15 degrees
What are the common sites for a subcut injection?
What are they used for?
What equipment?
What is the most common?
What max volume?
What angle?
abdomen, arms, thighs, upper ventral and dorsal gluteal areas
drugs that require a sustained slow rate of absorption like insulin and heparin
25-30 gauge needle 3/8-1 inch
3/8 and 5/8
no more than 1 mL
45-90 degrees depending on medication and length of needle
what are the specs for insulin syringes?
28-30 gauge
5/`6 - 1/2 inch needles
3/10 ths mL - 1 mL size
In what angle and method is heparin injected?
subcut - 90 degrees
What sites would you use for an IM injection based upon age?
Infants - vastus lateralis
Toddlers and children - vastus lateralis and deltoid
Adults - ventro gluteal and deltoid
Where would you give a biological injection for infants and young children?
Older children and adults?
vastus lateralis
deltoids
where would you give a hep B/rabies vaccination?
where would you give a vaccination for medicines that cause discomfort, or viscous or oily?
Deltoid
ventro gluteal
What are the sites for an Intramuscular injection?
What is IM used for?
What equipment?
Max Volume?
What angle?
Ventrogluteal, vastus lateralis, deltoid
Meds that require a slow, sustained release such as : hormones, vaccines, antibiotics, rabies, etc.
Needle length:
Vastus lateralis - 5/8-1
Deltoid (children) - 5/8-1 1/4
Deltoid (adults) - 5/8-1 1/2
Ventrogluteal (adults) 1 1/2
Gauge:
20-25 for biologicals in aqueous solution
18-25 for medications in an oil based solution
1-4mL for adults
1-2 mL for elderly and children
no more than 1mL in deltoid
72-90 degrees
why do we use the Z-track method? and when?
to prevent irritation of subcut tissues
recommended for all IM injections
