what are standard precautions?
precautions used in the care of all hospitalized individuals regardless of diagnosis or possible infection status
What are transmission based precautions?
precautions in addition to standard precautions for patients in hospitals with suspected infections with pathogens that can be transmitted by airborne, droplet, or contact routes.
What diseases require airborne precautions?
What are those precautions?
tuberculosis, SARS, varicella, rubeola
private negative pressure room, keep door closed and patient in room
wear a n95 respirator, if you have to transport a pt out of a room use a surgical mask
What are disease that require droplet precautions?
What are those precautions?
rubella, mumps, diptheria, adenovirus, flu
private room, door can be open
keep visitors 3 feet from infected pt
wear PPE, gloves if indicated and surgical mask within 3 feet
What disease require contact precautions?

MRSA, VRE, C-diff
Gloves and gown possibly mask
Pt gets private room
limit movement of pt outside room
what is a neutropenic precaution?
what are those precautions?
Its used for pts that are immunocompromised
make sure caregiver is healthy
restrict visits from friends and family who have colds or contagious illnesess
avoid collection of standing water in the room ( no flowers or humidifiers)
when would you use a penrose drain?
draining of abscess in abdominal surgery
when would you use a t-tube?
after gall bladder sugery
when would you use a Jackson-Pratt drain?
after breast removal or abdominal surgery
When would you use a hemovac?
After abdominal or, orthopedic surgery
when would you use gauze as a drain?
infected wounds, after removal of hemorrhoids
