What was public health like in the Middle Ages?

A

Coventry city tried to clean up the city and in 1421 the mayor required every man to clean outside their house. They were fined 12 pennies for refusing. In 1421 latrines were removed.

What was public health like in the Early Modern era?

A

The plague was a common problem and there was a big outbreak in 1665. People began making links between dirt and disease but had no evidence.

What was public health like in the Modern era?

A

People were moving into cities to get jobs. By 1851 more people lived in towns than in the countryside. Laissez-faire meant the government didn’t help. In 1842 the average death age for labourers was only 17 in the city.

How did Chadwick improve public health?

A

Chadwick published a report which lead to the Public Health Act in 1848. It said that local councils could improve sanitary conditions. The Public Health Act of 1875 was set up and forced local councils to provide clean water and appoint medical officers of health and sanitary inspectors.

How did Salt and Birmingham improve public health?

A

He built a village called Saltaire with 800 houses as well as schools, churches and parks. In Birmingham they were in a bad state and so gas and water socialism were introduced so that the council had control. They also cleared slums and got art galleries and libraries.

What changed in public health in the 20th century?

A

The Boer war encouraged surveys which proved that 35% of London was living in poverty. More houses were built and they began to have electricity, gas and running water. The killer smog in London caused the Clean Air act of 1993 to limit car and factory emissions.
