How did medieval people prevent the Black Death?
They avoided people with the Black Death, took part in processions, whipped themselves, bathed in urine, blood letting and King Edward III ordered the streets to be cleaned.
What else did they do in the Middle Ages to prevent disease?
Alchemists were trying to find the elixir of life. Soothsayers were carrying out spells to protect against evil. Mother Shipton was a famous soothsayer who helped people. Medieval doctors were rare and so monks and barber surgeons provided basic care.
What did they do in the Early Modern era to prevent disease?
There were a lot of fads like vegetarianism and giving up alcohol. They also had fresh air and exercised. Cold water treatment was used and people had plunge pools. Eating ‘cool’ foods and drinking cold water were also important.
What was discovered that lead to disease prevention in the Early Modern era?
Gordon discovered child bed fever he said that medical practitioners should wash their clothes and hands. New technology like miscroscopes also helped and James Lind worked out the cause of scurvy and why we needed to eat lime and fresh fruit. John Snow discoverd the cause of cholera and cut off the water supply, preventing the disease spreading.
What prevention was discovered by Edward Jenner?
The vaccination after proving that smallpox could be cured by cowpox. The discovery of the vaccination caused the MMR debate where papers were publishes, linking autism to vaccines.
Who else discovered ways to prevent disease in the Modern era?
James Lind identified the cause of scurvy and suggested lime juice and fresh fruit consumption. John Snow used maps to discover the source of Cholera in his area and took the handle off of the pump supplying contaminated water.
