What do scientists test drugs for?
Dosage, side effects on humans, if they react with other medicines
What’s a placebo?
Fake drug, to use in trails to see if it’s physiological or not
What’s a double blind trial?
Both doctor and patient don’t know if it’s a placebo or not
What’s the story behind thalidomide
It was developed as a sleeping pill but found that it can be used to treat pregnant morning sickness. It wasn’t tested for pregnant women however. Some babies were born with limb abnormalities. The drug was banned and is now used for leprosy.
What do statins do?
Lower the amount of LDL (bad) cholesterol in the body
What do drugs do?
Chemicals that alter the chemistry of the body, some can be addictive
What can recreational drugs do to the body?
Changes in the brain such as mental health issues and affect the nervous system.
Why are there more deaths from legal drugs than illegal ones?
Because they’re legal and can be bought over the counter there is a wider impact on health
Why do some cannabis users go onto hard drugs?
They have to buy cannabis from dealers who might introduce them to the harder stuff
Give a example of a drug used in sport and it’s effect
Steroids, they can build up muscle mass and thus improve performance. Athletes do it because they want to win badly. The give an unfair advantage, are unethical and can damage the body
