B3 - Human impact Flashcards
Name 3 ways humans pollute the earth
- Sewage, fertiliser
- Air with smoke/gases
- Land with pesticides
Name 2 impacts of deforestation
- Increased the rate of carbon dioxide from the burning and reduced rate of photosynthesis
- Lost food and habitats so loss of biodiversity
How do peat bogs cause pollution
The destruction of peat bogs releases carbon dioxide and is used for compost. This compost is decayed by micro-organisms which respire
What does sequestered mean
Kept in
So carbon dioxide is sequestered in plants and water
How are ethanol based biofuels created
Fermentation (anaerobic respiration of yeast)
Digestion of starch to sugar by carbohydrase
Distillation
How is biogas created
Anaerobic fermentation by bacteria
Waste material is broken down in biogas generators by having the optimum temperature and no oxygen
How can we make food efficiently
- Preventing the animal from moving so it doesn’t lose energy from movement
- Keep the animal warm so it doesn’t have to maintain a body temperature
This raises ethical concerns
Name 2 ways to make sustainable food production
- Fish stocks in the ocean are monitored
- Fishing quotas and nets to catch an allowable amount and not babies
What is mycoprotein
A fungus used for quorn food, called fusarium
Name 3 conditions of an industrial fermenter
- Air supply providing oxygen for aerobic respiration
- Stirrers to provide an even temperature
- A water cooled jacket surrounded as the respiring micro-organisms release energy
