Adaptation For Survival Flashcards
What do plants need to live?
Oxygen, water, space, light, carbon dioxide, nutrients (ions)
What do animals need to survive?
Oxygen, water, food from other organisms
What is meant by an ‘adaptation’ ?
A feature which allows an organism to live in its natural environment
Why do most organisms live in temperatures below 40 degrees
So enzymes can function properly
What are extremophiles
Mircoorganisms that are adapted to live in conditions where enzymes normally denature. Usually really cold or hot.
How are animals adapted to cold climates?
Small surface area to volume ratio so heat isn’t lost quickly.
Thick fur and blubber
Why do large animals find it difficult to cool down?
They have a large volume to surface area so the rate of heat loss is slow
Where do plants lose water?
Evaporating water vapour from the stomata
Give 3 ways a plant can conserve water
Swollen stem
Small leaves
waxy leaves
Give 3 ways a plant has learnt to adapt for survival
Swollen stem to conserve water such as the cacti
Mesquite tree has extensive root systems to collect water
Thorns or poisonous chemicals to harm predators
How are animals in competition with one another
For; Food, mates, water, space and breeding sites
How may animals be adapted to compete
Camouflaged
Name 5 living or non-living factors that effect an organism and if it’s able to live there anymore
Temperature, rainfall, light, oxygen levels, new predators, disease.
How do lichen indicate air pollution levels
The more lichen growing the cleaner the air.
Why might birds migrate?
Too warm climate, find new competition.
