B1 - Coordination And Control Flashcards
Explain what happens in the body when a pin is stabbed into someone leg
A stimulus (pin) is detected by the receptor cells, electrical impulse through the sensory nerve, to the CNS where it runs along the relay to the motor nerve and to a gland or organ called the effector where a response happens. At the gap called the synapse a chemical is passed which transfers the impulse.
What is a reflex arc
The journey from a receptor to an effector
Give the menstrual cycle
FSH made in the pituitary gland matures the egg (stimulates oestrogen)
Oestrogen made in the ovaries thickens the uterus lining (inhibits FSH and stimulates LH)
LH made in the pituitary gland causes ovulation (egg release)
What is the contraceptive pill
It may contains oestrogen or progesterone (safer if just the latter).
As oestrogen inhibits the production of FSH no eggs mature and so you don’t get pregnant
What is fertility treatment
When a woman can’t ovulate or mature, they’re given FSH or LH.
Give an advantage and a disadvantage of:
- Contraceptive pill
- Fertility treatment
Contraceptive:
A: reduced poverty from reduced family size
D: side effects
Fertility:
A: Can help aid IVF which helps couples to have a baby
D: IVF is considered unethical, especially for older women
Why is it important to control our body temperature?
So enzymes can function
Explain gravitropism vs phototropism
In a shoot, auxin grows on the dark side and increases cell growth so the shoot grows more on the dark side and ends up growing towards the light, this is phototropism. In a root, auxin grows on the lower side but it reduces cell growth and the root grows towards the ground, this is gravitropism.
Give some uses of plant hormones
Weedkiller
Taking cuttings, hormones used to develop
Encourage fruit to ripen
