Q
Diuretics (“water pills”)
- uses
- how they work
- side effects
- Effect on Ex.
- Common names
A
- HTN, CHF, edema, some kidney disorders
- inhibit absorption of Na+, make kidneys produce more urine to excrete Na+ (relaxes blood vessels)
- May lose K+ and electrolytes, may raise chol., dehydration
- No impact on ex rx
- Lasik, HCTZ (first line of rx for HTN)

- Effect on Ex.
- Common names
A
- HTN, angina, CAD, CHF, arrhythmias
- block beta receptors –> lowers HR & BP –> decr. load on heart
- (+) decrease mortality with MIs, (+) slow progression of CHF, (+) suppress minor arrhythmias, (-) impotence, (-) faitgue
- Target HR 10% less than normal, RHR & BP are decr. (blunts response to ex.)
- ends in “-lol”
