Why do you give Proton Pump Inhibitors (-prazole) for PUD and Pancreatitis?
Decreases HCl acid secretion by inhibiting the secretion of H+ and this can stimulate pancreatic activity
Side effects of Proton Pump Inhibitors (-prazole)
- Headache
- Abd pain
- N/V
- Diarrhea
- Flatulence
Why do you give Proton Pump Inhibitors (-prazole) for GERD?
Decreases irritation of esophageal & gastric mucosa
When do you take Omeprazole & Lansoprazole?
Take once a day prior to eating the main meal of the day
What class of medication is used in conjunction with antibiotics to treat H. pylori?
H2 Receptor Antagonists (-tidine)
What does Sucralfate do?
Acts to form a protective layer and serve as a barrier against acid, bile salts, and enzymes in the stomach
What is a concern when you give Sucralfate with PUD & GERD?
Constipation
What does Misoprostol do?
Protects lining of the stomach
Increase production of gastric mucus and mucosal secretion of bicarbonate
Decrease HCl acid secretion
Concern for giving Misoprostol?
Can cause uterine rupture if pregnant
