Multiple, noninflamed diverticula

What is Diverticulitis?
A
Inflammation and infection of bowel caused by bacteria, food, or fecal matter in one or more diverticula

What is the main factors of Diverticulosis?
A
Constipation and lack of dietary fiber

How do you tell you patients the difference between Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis?
A
Diverticulosis is not inflamed and not everyone that has this will have it develop to Diverticulitis

S/S of Diverticulitis
A
- Acute onset of abdominal pain LLQ
- N/V
- Distention
- Fever
- Chills
- Tachycardia

Elderly S/S of Diverticulitis
A
- Afebrile
- Normal WBC
- Possible abdominal tenderness

Education for Diverticulitis
A
- Clear liquid diet until S/S subside
- Progress to low-fiver diet once solid foods are okay
- Avoid seeds or ingestible material (nuts, popcorn, seeds)
- Avoid foods or drinks that can irritate bowel (alcohol and soda)

Care for Severe manifestations of Diverticulitis
A
(severe pain and high fever)
- NPO
- NGT
- IV fluids
- Antibiotics
- Opioids for pain
