Chronic recurrent inflammation of intestinal tract that will cause only diarrhea
What are the two types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
- Ulcerative colitis (colon)
2. Crohn’s disease (colon, anus. mouth)
What is the main difference between Ulcerative colitis & Crohn’s disease besides location?
Ulcerative colitis has bleeding while Crohn’s disease doesn’t have bleeding
What can cause an exacerbation of Crohn’s disease?
Oral contraceptives and NSAIDs
Complications from Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Hemorrhage
- Fistulas
- Perforation
- Liver failure
- Systemic complications (joint, eye, mouth, kidney, vascular, skin)
What is the gold standards for diagnosis Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Colonoscopy
Step up approach medication
- Aminosalicyates: Sulfasalazine (Azuifidine)
- Antimicrobials
- Corticosteroids (decrease inflammation)
- Immunosuppressants
- Biologic & targeted therapy
If you are giving Immunosuppressants, what do you need to be monitoring?
Regular CBC to monitor for Bands and a shift to the left
What supplements might a patient need to take while taking their step up medications?
- daily folic acid supplements (prenatal)
- Calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis
- Potassium supplements
- Vitamin D supplements
Why are liquid enteral feedings preferred during acute exacerbation?
- High in calories and nutrients
- Lactose free
- Easily absorbed
What is a concern with Chron’s disease and surgery ?
You cannot keep taking out parts of the bowel to try and cure it since it flares up in different places in the colon, anus, and mouth
What is a common place for a fistula to occur as a complication from Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Bladder causing UTI

- Manage hygiene until diarrhea is controlled: odor & skin breakdown
- Monitor I/O
