Medication Administration Flashcards
Absorption
drug is transferred from site of entry into bloodstream. Influenced by route of administration, lipid solubility, pH, blood flow, surface area, dosage
Adverse Drug Effect
any undesirable effect other than what is intended
Allergic Effect
immune response that occurs when the body interprets the administered drug as foreign substance and form antibodies against the drug
Anaphylactic Effect
most serious allergic effect
Antagonist Effect
blocking
Cumulative Effect
drug builds up in the body since it is not being excreted properly
Distribution
After absorption, drug is distributed throughout the body. Depends on blood flow to the tissues, and the drug’s availability to leave the bloodstream
Drug Tolerance
In physiology, physiological tolerance or drug tolerance is commonly encountered in pharmacology, when a subject’s reaction to a drug (such as an opiate painkiller, benzodiazepine or other psychotropic drug) decreases so that larger doses are required to achieve the same effect
Excretion
Drug is excreted from the body. Occurs typically or most commonly via the kidneys
Generic Name
assigned by the manufacturer that first develops the drug. Ex. Acetaminophen.
Half-life
amount of time it takes for 50% of the blood concentration of a drug to be eliminated from the body.
Idiosyncratic Effect
unusual or peculiar response to a drug that may manifest itself by over response, under response, or opposite of the expected response
Metabolism
Change in drug from its original form to a new form. Liver is primary site of metabolism.
Peak Level
highest plasma concentration of the drug.
Pharamcodynamic
process by which drugs alter cell physiology and affect the body
Pharmacokinetic
Effects between body and drug
Pharmacotherapeutic
drug is producing desired effects without toxicity
Placebo
simulated or fake medical intervention that can produce a perceived or actual improvement
STAT Order
immediate order: give immediately
Synergistic Effect
enhancing effect. When two drugs are synergistic to each other, effects are greater than that of each drug alone
Teratogenic
harmful to fetus
Therapeutic Range
concentration of drug in the blood serum that produces the desired effect without causing toxicity
Topical Application
medication is applied to body surfaces
Toxic Effect
specific groups of symptoms related to drug therapy that carry risk for permanent damage or death
Trade Name
brand name or copyrighted name
Trough Level
lowest concentration of the drug in systemic circulation. Level drawn 30 minutes prior to next dose
Ampule
A small glass vial that is sealed after filling and used chiefly as a container for a hypodermic injection solution
Piggyback
Smaller amount of fluid in an IV bag, hung with main IV line. Typically antibiotics are given this way
Vial
A small container, usually with a closure, used especially for liquids
Volume Control Administration Set
Also known as a Buretrol set. Has standard IV tubing, but with an addition of a large chamber where medication can be put in and volumn controlled into the IV line
