Medical Procedures For Heart And Vascular Diseases Flashcards
Atherectomy
Similar to angioplasty but catheter has rotating shave to cut plaque away from artery
Automatic Implantation Cardioverter-Defibrillator (AICD)
Device implanted that shocks to restore normal heart rhythm
Balloon Angioplasty
Balloon catheter in artery, expanding balloon to widen artery + stent to keep it open
Balloon Valvuloplasty
Balloon angioplasty but for stenotic heart valves
Cardiac ablation
Destruction of areas of the myocardium contributing to cardiac arrhythmias
Cardiac Pacamaker
Standard treatment for conditions affecting the electrical condition (ie slow HR/arrhythmias), usually in L anterior chest
Modes/functions are described with 5 position format aka NBG code
Cardioversion
Restores a normal heart rhythm for tachyarrhythmias through electrodes
Cornary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
Treat narrow/closed coronary arteries to revascularize myocardium
Use saphenous vein, internal thoracic/mammary artery, radial artery to connect artery above and below occlusion
Enhanced Extracorporeal Counterpulsation (EECP)
Inflation of pressure cuffs on the LEs to compress veins to help with venous return
Heart Transplant
Failing, diseased heart replaced with donor heart
For pts with end-stage renal failure when other tx have not been successful
Intra-aortic Balloon Counterpulsation (IABP)
Balls inflation/deflation in aorta to help with circulation after infarct/cardiogenic shock
Valve Replacement
Prosthetic valve (mechanical or tissue grafts) replaces leaky/narrowed heart valve
Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD)
Mini pump to provide mechanical support to ventricle (RVAD bypasses RV, LVAD bypasses LV, BiVAD bypasses both)
Temporary treatment for people waiting for heart transplant
