Medical Intelligence Flashcards
purpose of Medical Intelligence (MI)
to conserve the fighting strength of friendly forces, support policy formulation, strategic and medical planning, tactical operations, and to assess foreign health care systems in both military and civilian sectors
overall goal of MI
ensure that the medical threat is identified and medical defenses or countermeasures are implemented
medical heath risk estimate to provide a clear picture of the entire spectrum of medical issues for forces associated with any given contingency
Medical Threat Assessments
Medical Threat Assessment topics
Endemic Diseases
Environmental Factors
Hazardous Insects & Vector-borne Diseases
Hazardous Plants, Animals & Zoonotic Diseases
Field Sanitation & Hygiene
Occupational Health
Countermeasures
concepts to evaluate the disease threats in the area to be able to determine the medical health risk estimate
Disease Incidence/Prevalence
Morbidity/Mortality
Endemic/Epidemic
A consolidated report that includes an executive summary covering the event information
After Action Report
conducted during the base deployment processing for all wing deploying forces, which can happen at home station or a deployed location
Medical Threat briefing
designed to prevent exposure, adverse human health effects, and diminished quality of life
Risk Communication
what to include in an After Action Report
I. Dates of the event.
II. Location of the event.
III. Participants in the event.
IV. Observations
when to submit an After Action Report
NLT 45 days post-deployment if operations are part of the continuous AEF cycle
30 days for contingencies and exercises
a document with instructions on what an individual must complete prior to their deployment and adherence standards to comply with during their deployment
Country Specific Reporting Instructions
Is part of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)
It provides baseline medical intelligence assessments on countries worldwide
National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI)
CIA website with good info on a country (climate, geography, topography, etc.)
It also includes limited info on infectious diseases
World Fact Book
Like the CDC, but includes diseases from around the world
This website is good for looking up diseases, however it’s not country-specific friendly
World Health Organization (WHO)
Located in the United States, it gives travel information based on what country you are visiting
Recommends vaccines/chemoprophylaxis, prevention measures, and travel health notices
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Travel Health (CDC)
Primarily used for obtaining visas and passports
It also has travel alerts and warnings if you are traveling to a dangerous country
U.S. Department of State
Is located in the Armed Forces Pest Management Board website
It provides information on medically important arthropods, vertebrates and plants that may adversely affect troops in specific countries or regions of the world
Disease Vector Ecology Profiles (DVEPS)
Accomplished after deployments, contingencies and exercises
submitted electronically using AF-Joint Lessons Learned Information System
After Action Reports (AARs)
A published journal by the CDC
It is a great source of what is happening in the U.S. and internationally, listing the most up-to-date information on disease prevention
Morbidity/Mortality Weekly Reports
Perform medical intelligence functions
Public Health Officer or Public Health NCOIC
a member of the Medical Readiness Committee (MRC)
Public Health Officer or Public Health NCOIC
