Assessing the appropriateness of moderate and vicarious levels of exercise

- dietary intake
- management of stress
- level of physical activity
- other practices that may affect health
How should a PT utilize the information obtained from a clients history/health appraisal and lifestyle questionnaire?
- By communicating with the client
- view their documents and recognize risk factors or health issues
- if necessary recommend the client to Heathcote professionals
Why is it necessary to understand a clients exercise history?
- will be able to recognize if a client has little or no history of physical activity
- physical inactivity is a major contributor to development of CAD and requires evaluation to assess potential concerns and level of risk
- will affect the program development, testing and exercise selection, supervised vs unsupervised program
- will help identify individuals who may be at increased risk and to stratify their risk
What reasons or situations may require a client to be referred to a healthcare professional?
- if a client answers “yes” to one or more questions (which are related to the signs and symptoms associated with CAD, orthopedic concerns and diagnosis by a physician)
- pregnant women
- is stratified as moderate risk and wants to vigorous exercise
- stratified as high risk and wants to participate in moderate or vigorous exercise
- symptoms and signs of chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary (high risk symptoms), metabolic, or orthopedic disease that may contradict exercise
- identification of 1+ Coronary Artery Disease factors (CVD)
How does a clients medical/health and exercise history affect the exercise prescription?
Some individuals possess existing factors that put them at greater potential risk for coronary episode because of the increased demand that exercise imposes on an already compromised system
What are the primary and secondary risk factors for coronary artery disease?
Age, gender, family history, elevated LDL cholesterol, reduced HDL cholesterol, smoking, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes mellitus, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle are all risk factors of CAD

- Registered dietician
- physician that specializes in area of concern
