Medical emergencies
The best way to prevent an emergency is by obtaining a thorough health history.
Heart condition angina pectoris
Sublingually administer nitroglycerin tablets
Heart condition Congestive heart failure
Place orient in a semi-upright position, rather than supine position.
Heart condition Myocardial infarction
Also referred to as a heart attack.
Heart condition Rate of breathing
Normal adult respirations are between 12-20 breaths per minute
Respiratory emergency antihistamines
Patient history may list allergies
Respiratory emergency bronchodilator
Rescue inhaler may contain albuterol (acute asthma)
Respiratory emergency COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Do not administer nitrous oxid/oxygen analgesia to the patients. It may impair lung function
General cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
Symptoms: slow respirations, uneven pupils, obvious weakness or paralysis on one side of the face or body, call 911. CVA
General Syncope (a symptom) refers to a loss of consciousness/postural hypotension
Swooning or fainting, can be caused by standing up too quickly causing a rapid blood pressure change.
General anaphylactic shock
Severe allergic reactions left untreated may become anaphylactic shock. Symptoms: difficulty breathing, cramping, tongue and threat swelling, decrease in blood pressure. Call 911
General seizure disorders (grand mal, petite man, convulsive episodes)
The most common seizure observed in the dental office in one associated with epilepsy. Do not force anything between the convulsing patients teeth, do not hold them down. Remove any nearby potential dangerous objects and call 911.

Average rate for adults is 10-20 per minute
