Basic principals of ethics
Rules or principals that govern proper conduct.
Regard for self-determination (autonomy)
This includes the right to privacy, freedom of choice, and the acceptance of responsibility for ones actions.
To “do no harm” (nonmaleficence)
Comes from Hippocrates dictate to do no harm. It is the most basic element of morality and it relates to all interpersonal and professional behavior.
Promotion of bell-being (beneficence)
Based on the idea that actions are ethical as long as they will benefit a person or community.
HIPAA
Health insurance portability and accountability act of 1996.
It requires that the transactions of all patient healthcare information be formatted in a standardized electronic form. HIPAA encompasses privacy requirements that can be broken down into three types: privacy standards, patients rights, administrative requirements.
