What is delirium characterised by?
An alteration of attention, consciousness, and cognition, with a reduced ability to focus, sustain or shift attention
When does delirium develop?
Over a short period of time and fluctuates during the day
Difference between delirium (1) and dementia (2)
(1) an abrupt onset of reduced orientation to the environment
(2) a gradual neurodegenerative process leading to disturbance core features
Nursing considerations for dementia
Maintain safe environment, encourage a structured routine, administer medication if required, monitor behavioural and psychological changes, provide support
Nursing considerations for delirium
Remain calm and comforting, treat underlying cause, provide familiar objects, reorient patient as needed
