Medial Cuneiform Flashcards
Medial cuneiform
dorsal surface is apex of wedge
more of crest or border than surface
palpable subcutaneously
Plantar surface and partial attachments (3)
base of medial cuneiform partial insertion of three muscles: tibialis anterior tibialis posterior peroneus longus
Ligaments attached to plantar surface (4)
plantar cuneonavicular
plantar intercuneiform
plantar cuneometatarsal to first metatarsal
plantar cuneometatarsal to second metatarsal
Medial surface of medial cuneiform
quadrilateral shape
palpable subcutaneously
no articulation with other tarsal bone
contains small facet near anteroinferior aspect (small bursa between this facet and sesamoid bone of tendon of tibialis anterior)
Ligaments attached to medial surface (5)
medial cuneonavicular
dorsal cuneonavicular
dorsal intercuneiform
dorsal cuneometatarsal to first metatarsal
dorsal cuneometatarsal to second metatarsal
Lateral surface of medial cuneiform
concave with two articular facets:
Oval - anteriorly; for base of second metatarsal
L-shaped - horizontal portion superior - for intermediate cuneiform
Ligaments attached to lateral surface (2)
Lisfranc’s ligament - interosseous tarsometatarsal ligament attaches lateral medial cuneiform to second metatarsal
Interosseous intercuneiform ligament to intermediate cuneiform
Anterior surface of medial cuneiform
kidney shaped
articulates with base of first metatarsal
Posterior surface of medial cuneiform
concave
articulates with navicular
facet can be triangular, pear-shaped or quadrilateral
