Broadcast media and media put out on TV have one of if not biggest influences on voter choice during elections. broadcast media will often influence people to vote a certain way based on the information produced.

According to an Oxford study done after the 2019 elections 35% of people based their vote on TV debates a type of broadcast media.

Broadcast media has one of the biggest influences as a relatively large percentage of people will base their vote on this type of media. Therefore broadcast media has a heavy influence and is one of the strongest factors when it comes to voting behavior.

A large number of voters choose who they plan to vote for before anything is ever even broadcast, so a lot of what is produced by this type of media just reinforces voter choice.

Print media will often try to push voters to vote in a certain way. Print media is not obligated to be impartial and can promote one party over the other. This will often influence voters as they will follow the view of their newspaper.

In 2019 the sun produced a headline that claimed that a labor government would be “a nightmare”.

This headline may have influenced voters to not vote for the labor party and pushed them towards voting for the conservatives. This shows that print media, at least in the past, has influenced people to vote a certain way and can push voters to vote for a certain party, effecting voting behavior.

Most of the public nowadays don’t get news from newspapers or other forms of print media, opting to go for social media instead. Print media doesn’t actually make much of a difference since most don’t use it to get information, it will only reinforce the voters previously made choice.
