Media effects - Albert Bandura Flashcards
What was the experiment set up by Albert Bandura?
He placed children in a room with a “Bobo Doll”. Adults were told to play violently with the doll whilst children observed, before going in and also being rough with the doll.
What did Albert Bandura believe about children who saw particular violent behaviour?
They would copy this behaviour and become more violent
What did Albert Bandura believe about children observing behaviour?
They would copy this behaviour
Albert Bandura’s theory is that if we watch media products we will…
copy or model our behaviour on what we see, especially violent or aggressive behaviour
Why is the fact that Albert Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiment was in a lab environment a problem?
It’s not the same as showing how this would happen in real life - children would’ve been aware of the camera and perhaps wanted to please the adults. Artificial behaviour trying to please the researchers
What is the problem with the use of a Bobo doll in Albert Bandura’s theory?
It’s not a human. Does being violent towards a toy really mean you would be violent to a real person?
