Media Flashcards
Blood agar plate (BAP)
Cultivation of most organisms, determination of hemolytic reactions
Chocolate agar
- Blood is heated until lysed
- cultivation of Haemophilus, pathogenic Neisseria, and nutritionally-deficient Strep
Columbia-nalidixic acid agar (CNA)
selective isolation of Gram+ cocci; inhibits most Gram- organisms
Mannitol salt agar
isolate S. aureus from mixed culture; inhibits most Gram- organisms
MacConkey agar
- isolation and differentiation of lactose fermenting and non-lactose fermenting enteric bacilli
- lactose fermenters are red/pink, while non-lactose fermenters are clear
- Gram+ and fastidious organisms inhibited by bile salts and crystal violet
Lactose fermenters (CEEK)
Citrobacter, E. coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella
Eosin methylene blue agar (EMB)
isolation and differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae and Gram- rods o Green sheen: characteristic of E. coli o Pigmented (black/purple): lactose fermenters
Xylose lysine deoxychocolate agar (XLD)
isolation and differentiation of salmonella and shigella from other normal stool flora
- Red with black center: salmonella and H2S producers
- Red: shigella (cannot ferment xylose)
- Yellow/orange: normal colonic flora
Hektoen-enteric agar (HE)
isolation and differentiation of salmonella and shigella from other normal stool flora
- Green w/ black center: Salmonella
- Green: shigella
- Salmon pink/orange: lactose fermenters
Salmonella-shigella agar (SS)
isolation and differentiation of salmonella and shigella from other normal stool flora
- Colorless with black center: salmonella
- colorless: shigella
- red: lactose fermenters
Thayer-Martin agar (MTM)
chocolate agar with vanc, colistin and nystatin
selective for N/ gonorrhea and meningitidis; suppresses growth of saphrophytic Neisseria species
GC-Lect agar
used for pathogenic Neisseria; permits growth of some vanc-sensitive Neisseria that are inhibited by MTM agar
Buffered charcoal yest extract agar (BCYE)
growth of nocardia and legionella
Regan Lowe
isolation of Bordetella pertussis and parapertussis; inhibits normal flora of nasopharynx and yeast/fungi
Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA)
General fungal media. Inhibits growt of some bacteria due to high glucose content and low pH.
Potato Flake Agar (PFA)
Primary recovery media for saprophytic (living on dead organic matter) and pathogenic fungi
Yeast ChromAgar
Selective medium for isolation and presumptive identification of yeast and filamentous fungi. Candida species different colors.
Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA)
Used for prep of microslide culture and sporulation of dermatophytes. Demontrates pigment by T. rubrum
Dermatophyte Test medium (DTM)
SDA with added cyclohexamide to inhibit saprotrophic growth. Antibiotics to inhibit bacterial growth and phenol red as pH indicator (agar turns red in presence of dermatophytes)
Cycloheximide agar
Primary recovery media for dermatophytes and dimorphic fungi. Contains chloramphenicol and cyclohexamide to inhibit bacteria and saprophytic fungi respectrively.
Brain-Heart-Infusion agar
enriched media for fastidious fungi.
Lowenstein-Jensen Media
semisolid egg-based media
contains malachite green
used for MTB and NTMs
MGIT Broth media
modified middlebrook broth medai
antiobiotic cocktail added to suppress growth of other bacteria
C. diptheria media
Modified Tinsdale media
Cystine tellurite blood agar
